Authorities Investigate Alleged Rape At Cary Rest Home

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Cary police are investigating an alleged rape case involving an 90-year-old woman.

Police said someone attacked a woman in her bedroom at the Chatham Creek Rest Home early Tuesday morning. Authorities said a door alarm went off at 2 a.m. An hour later, hospital personnel found the woman in her bed with bruises on her face.

Detectives said employees spotted a strange man in the building around 3 a.m., but they do not know if it was another employee or the suspect.

"There is nothing here that indicates it was an employee," said Sgt. Randall Swallow, of the Cary Police Department.

Authorities are trying to figure out how the suspect got into the rest home. Authorities told WRAL they think they know who the suspect is, but they have not made any arrests.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where she is recovering, but family members are concerned about bringing her back to the rest home.

Officials with the rest home said they plan to conduct their own investigation into the incident.
