According to police, the robbery occurred at a Burger King restaurant at
Raeford and Brighton roads
around 9:45 p.m. Shortly afterward, officers spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the getaway car headed toward downtown Fayetteville.
Police pursued the Honda Passport along Morganton Road. When the suspects were clocked at speeds exceeding 90 mph, officers called off the pursuit in the Haymount area. Shortly afterward, the suspects' vehicle hit a telephone pole at
North Olive Road
and crashed into a building, then caught fire.
"They hit the wall here and one guy was on fire when they were here," said witness Deno Skenteras.
One man and four women were in the car when it crashed, said authorities. Two of the women and the man died at the scene. One woman, who was also in the car, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition Saturday morning.
The fifth person inside the car fled the scene before authorities arrived, said police. She surrendered to police early Saturday morning. There is no word yet on possible charges.
Officers arrested another man at the scene shortly after the crash, but they determined that he was not involved in the crash. Police have not yet released the names of anyone involved, pending notifications of family members.
