SANFORD, N.C. — One man was killed and another was seriously injured in an early-morning shootout, said Sanford police.

According to authorities, officers were called to the corner of Boykin Avenue and Fields Drive at about 2 a.m. Saturday, where they found two men who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Nicholas Palmer, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lambert Thompson, 25, was taken to Central Carolina Hospital and later flown to UNC Hospitals, where he was listed in extremely critical condition early Saturday evening.
