Nifong To Have Write-In Opponent For DA

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Durham County Republican Party Chairman Steve Monks decided Wednesday morning to stage a write-in campaign for Durham County district attorney.

Wednesday was the deadline for write-in candidates to file their intentions with the elections board for the November election and submit signatures of support from at least 100 registered voters.

Earlier this summer, Monks ran door to door but fell short in his attempt to collect enough signatures to get his name on the ballot to run against District Attorney Mike Nifong. He has been critical of Nifong's handling of the Duke lacrosse rape case.

Durham County Commissioner Lewis Cheek's name also will be on the November ballot, but Cheek said he doesn't plan to campaign for the district attorney.

Cheek hasn't asked his supporters to endorse Monks. He said he plans to vote for himself in November, although he won't accept the job if he wins the election.
