RALEIGH, N.C. — Attorneys for a death row inmate will ask Gov. Mike Easley to spare their client's life.

A clemency hearing will be held Thursday for Samuel Flippen, who is scheduled to die Aug. 18.

The Forsyth County man was sentenced to death for killing his 2-year-old stepdaughter 12 years ago.

Prosecutors said Flippen beat the little girl because she was crying.
