Police: Speed Factor In Deputy's Fatal Motorcycle Crash

RALEIGH, N.C. — Authorities said speed was a factor in the death of a Wake County sheriff's deputy who was killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday night.
According to a Raleigh police report, Lee Godwin, 24,was traveling about 85 mph in a 45 mph zone on Ray Road, near Lynn Road, when he lost control of his motorcycle.
The report said Godwin struck a mailbox and flew off his motorcycle. He then struck a utility pole and landed in the front yard of a house.
Investigators said Godwin was not on duty at the time of the accident.
