The van, which carried at least 10 people, blew a tire, and the driver lost control, swerving to the right of the highway, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said. The driver overcompensated to the left, causing the van to overturn several times before stopping in the median.
Two passengers, a man and a woman who were not wearing their seatbelts, were ejected from the van and died at the scene, authorities said.
Another male passenger died en route to a local hospital.
The passengers, all Haitian citizens in the United States on work visas, were taken to several other hospitals across the state with minor to serious injuries.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.
