Sewage Spill Discussed By Cary Residents, Officials

Posted Updated

CARY, N.C. — Cary's Swift Creek Pump Station was back online Thursday, as officials briefed nearby residents about the cleanup and repairs.

Millions of gallons of raw sewage spilled into Swift Creek after heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto caused a water line to burst at a pump station.

As a result, trucks had to haul the waste around the pump station to bypass the problem. The spill forced officials to close Lake Wheeler and Lake Benson for several days, along with a portion of Holly Springs Road.

The spill was the topic of discussion at a Swift Creek Exchange Club meeting on Thursday evening. Also, the stormwater task force updated leaders on water quality test results and offered suggestions to avoid another spill at another meeting on Thursday.
