Raleigh Police Hope Stop Sticks Put Safe End To High-Speed Pursuits

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh Police Department is hoping a simple tool will take most of the danger out high-speed chases.

Stop sticks are designed to puncture the tires of the first car that drives over them. Within seconds, they can bring a speeding car to a gradual halt.

"Stop sticks are a way to either nip a pursuit in the bud -- to really safely and slowly end a pursuit or something that may turn into a pursuit," Chief Jane Perlov said.

Perlov said a set of stop sticks costs about $300. The police department said there is room in its budget to buy them, but there is no word when that will happen.
