Suspect Arrested In Chatham County Beating Death

Posted Updated

CHATHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities arrested a suspect on Monday in connection with the death of the son of a Chatham County Sheriff's Office employee.

Edwin Pennix, 30, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the beating death of Darrle Harris, 38, of Siler City.

Officers said Pennix struck Harris in the head with a wooden object during an argument late Monday afternoon. Harris died en route to a local hospital.

It was not immediately clear what the argument was about, authorities said, or whether drugs or alcohol were a factor.

Pennix, who was held under no bond at the Randolph County Jail, is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on July 19.

Harris is the son of James Harris, who works for the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.
