Chain-Reaction Wreck Snarls I-40 Morning Commute

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — A wreck early Friday morning on eastbound Interstate 40 closed lanes of the highway and caused massive traffic backups stretching for miles at times.

The wreck happened at 6:45 a.m. between Airport Boulevard and I-540 when a car hit a stalled tractor-trailer on I-40. Another tractor-trailer then hit the car.

Traffic was backed up at one point from the wreck area in Wake County all the way to N.C. 55 in Durham. Lt. Everett Clendenin of the state Highway Patrol said the extended delays occurred because troopers had to remove the large tractor-trailer, which meant getting a special wrecker and unloading merchandise.

At least one other wreck happened during the traffic back-ups, causing more delays. There were minor injuries reported.

The road reopened shortly after 10 a.m.
