LAURINBURG, N.C. — The roof of an abandoned high school gym collapsed in Laurinburg early Tuesday afternoon, injuring seven construction workers.

Authorities said eight workers were working on rafters on the old Laurinburg Junior High School on Church Street when part of the roof collapsed and the rafters fell. According to authorities, four workers were pinned by the rafters, while three others were hit as they fell. One person is said to have suffered severe injuries.

"I heard it crack. I looked and everything started coming down. I ran out when everybody hit (the ground), we all went back in and tried to get our people out," said an uninjured worker.

Authorities do not yet know why the roof collapse occurred. The accident remains under investigation.
