SILER CITY, N.C. — A 13-year-old Siler City boy is recovering at UNC Hospitals after being shot in the midsection at a neighbor's house.

Authorities said the boy was accidentally shot by a 14-year-old friend Thursday morning after they found a 12-gauge shotgun.

According to statements gathered at the scene, the boys were looking for a movie to watch in the master bedroom closet when the gun was found. It is not known if the gun was loaded when the boys found it or if they loaded it after it was discovered.

The boy was airlifted to UNC Hospitals and was in surgery for several hours. Doctors believe the boy will survive.

Authorities said neither boy lived at the address of the shooting and were just visiting a family friend. The homeowner, Timothy Edwards, was not present at the time of the shooting.

No charges have been filed in the case.
