Tractor-Trailer Crashes Into Bridge, Prompts Delays

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — An accident involving a tractor-trailer that crashed into a bridge along part of Interstate 40 caused serious traffic backups Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened on eastbound I-40 at mile marker 314 in Johnston County. Both lanes were blocked for hours, and traffic was backed up as far as N.C. Highway 70 (mile marker 306).

It was not immediately clear what happened to cause the truck to crash into the Cleveland Road Bridge, which stretches across the interstate, or if there were any injuries.

Hazmat crews cleaned up diesel fuel that spilled. Traffic was being routed around the scene onto the shoulder of the highway.
