IBM Laying Off 400 Engineers, Including 35 In RTP

Posted Updated

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. — IBM

is trimming its engineering ranks by 400 jobs, including 35 in the Triangle.

"Last week in RTP we had about 35 employees who were notified that their jobs were being eliminated," a spokesperson told WRAL.com.

"Those employees will have 30 days to look for another position within the company," she added.

The 35 workers were part of the Systems and Technology Group.

The 400 job eliminations are across the Systems Technology Group, not just among BladeCenter server staff, she added.

The Systems and Technology Group includes the BladeCenter.

InformationWeek first reported the layoffs on Monday, but did not have figures for individual facilities.

Citing an internal IBM memo and other sources, the technology news site said cuts were taking place at IBM engineering facilities in Austin, Texas, Burlington, Vt., San Jose, Calif., Rochester, Minn., Poughkeepsie and Fishkill, N.Y., and Raleigh.

The BladeCenter operation in Raleigh is considered one of IBM's more important ones.

InformationWeek said the IBM memo was dated Oct. 5.
