Coats Police Officer Resigns In Wake Of Critcism

COATS, N.C. — A police officer's motto is to serve and protect. One local officer has resigned after accusations that he did not try to save a drowning man.

Last week, a driver crashed his car into a river off Highway 27. According to witness Mark Parrish,Coats police officer Marshall Lucas did not try to rescue the man.

Parrish said he pulled the driver out, but it was too late to save him.

The Coats Police Department said officers are not trained for water rescue and are standing by Lucas.
