Former UNC Star Forte Being Sought For Alleged Assault In Chapel Hill

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Former North Carolina basketball player Joseph Forte, already facing drugs and weapons charges in Maryland, now is being sought by UNC police in connection with an alleged assault on a student during a pickup basketball game.

The incident happened Thursday afternoon in Woolen Gym on campus. According to witnesses, Forte assaulted James Gibson as they argued during the game. The assault left a deep cut over the left eye of Gibson, who was taken to the emergency room and discharged.

Forte - who faces possible misdemeanor assault charges for the incident -- fled the scene. He has not been seen since.

Witnesses said the assault was unprovoked. The UNC campus police continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information to call them.

Forte recently was arrested in Maryland by the Highway Patrol for posssession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a hand gun and speeding. He reportedly was going 90 mph in a 65-mph zone.
