RALEIGH, N.C. — A man driving a stolen SUV crashed the vehicle in North Raleigh as police raced to catch up Wednesday afternoon.

Officers said they were not chasing the Jeep Cherokee, but were simply trying to catch up to it, when the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Wake Forest Road and Old Wake Forest Road just north of the Beltline.

The driver reportedly saw police cars behind him and panicked. He tried to switch lanes and spun out of control, hitting another car.

Witnesses said the Jeep flew at least 10 feet in the air.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No one in the other vehicle was injured.

Police said the Jeep was stolen from a west Raleigh service station.
