— Former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes is endorsing North Carolina Sen. John Edwards for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The

Atlanta Journal-Constitution

reports in Thursday's editions that Barnes' support is based on his long-standing ties with Edwards, a fellow Democrat and lawyer.

Barnes also says he and his wife had made the maximum allowable contributions to Edwards.

Georgia's primary will not be until March 2004, weeks after the nation's first presidential primary.
