Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — The FBI and the Sanford Police Department announced Monday that Jonathan Lee Thompson has been arrested for multiple bank robberies.

A federal warrant was issued for Thompson's arrest Friday following an investigation by the FBI's Raleigh-Durham Area Violent Crime Task Force and the Sanford Police Department.

The investigation revealed that Thompson was in the Myrtle Beach area, where Thompson was arrested without incident by Myrtle Beach police.

Thompson was being held in South Carolina on Monday awaiting his first appearance in court.

According to authorities, Thompson is a suspect in seven bank robberies in North Carolina. Local arrest warrants have been issued for last Monday's robbery of an RBC Centura Bank in Sanford, a robbery at the CCB in Pittsboro back on Jan. 22 and the robbery of a First Union in Rocky Mount on March 14.

Thompson also is charged with a robbery in Randolph County in January and suspected in two or three other robberies.

Local authorities had nicknamed him the "Envelope Bandit" for his robbery style.
