Authorities Release Teen Accused Of Setting Moore County Woman On Fire

Posted Updated

MOORE COUNTY, N.C. — A teenager suspected of beating a Moore County woman and setting her on fire is out of jail Friday.

A judge ruled that there is not enough probable cause to hold David Shaw, who was charged with attempted murder in the March 25 attack on 27-year-old Sherry Bean.

Southern Pines police believe Shaw assaulted Bean, then set her on fire in an abandoned garage. Bean lost one arm and several fingers. She also has burns over 40 percent of her body.

Patricia and David Bean have visited their daughter at the Jaycee Burn Center ever since the incident. They said Shaw deserves to be in jail.

"He tried to kill her. He didn't just hit her a little bit and let her go. This man took his time," Patricia said.

Bean has been unconscious at the Jaycee Burn Center since the attack.

The State Bureau of Investigation is conducting tests on physical evidence. Authorities say Shaw could be indicted and arrested again if the tests show that he is linked to the crime.
