Jailed Roxboro Man Confesses To Pool Hall Murder

ROXBORO, N.C. — A man behind bars for a convenience store robbery Tuesday in Person County has confessed to murder in a separate case.

According to the Person County Sheriff's Office, 24-year-old Brad Clayton is charged in the murder of Otis Long, who was beaten to death in his business in early March.

Roxboro police on Wednesday charged Clayton with robbery and assault with intent to kill in connection with Tuesday night's robbery, during which a store employee was severely beaten. Clayton is being held in the Person County Jail without bail.

County investigators questioned Clayton about the March 5 murder of Long at the pool hall Long operated just north of town. Sheriff Dennis Oakley said Clayton, a suspect in a string of robberies, confessed to that murder.

The store clerk in Tuesday's robbery, according to the incident report, suffered severe head injuries after being beaten about the head with a 10-ounce glass soda bottle.

Long died March 5.

Oakley said someone came into Long's business between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. that day, hit Long in the head and forced him into a restroom. Oakley said Long managed to get out but fell unconscious next to the bar and later died at University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
