Fire Destroys Harnett County Church

Posted Updated

ANGIER, N.C. — Fire destroyed a Harnett County church that dates back centuries on Saturday.

Emotions overflowed as members of Williams Chapel AME Church stopped for a moment of prayer in front of their burned-out santuary.

Flames tore through the building in Angier before sunrise Saturday. It reportedly took more than 10 hours to extinguish the fire.

There were no reported injuries; no one was in the church at the time of the fire.

The church had been part of the community for more than 200 years and had recently been renovated.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire.
