Durham Students 'Exercise' Mind With Special Program

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Exercise and academics go hand-in-hand at one Durham school.

Every morning, children at Forest View Elementary start their day with a few easy moves in a program called brain gym.

Officials say the idea is simple. Physical activity helps get the brain going.

"It's physical action that uses the right and left side of the body that gets the right and left side of the brain working together. Some of the exercises are for focusing, some of them are for writing and some are for math skills," instructor Robin Derr said.

Officials said the school has seen an increase in test scores since implementing the program last spring.
