Some Scrooges May Take Advantage Of Winter Storm Victims

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham man claims he was taken advantage of by two people who said they wanted to clean up his debris.

Joe Diver said two men from a Vermont tree removal service quoted him a price last weekend. Diver gave them a $200 deposit, and the workers never came back.

"It seemed legit. He had a business card that said fully insured on it. It had phone numbers and everything," Diver said.

Diver said he has already called the state attorney general's office. There are a number of ways to protect yourself from being a victim.

  • Beware of door-to-door repair crews. Police say if one approaches you, never accept their offer on the spot.
  • Never pay for work in advance. If the offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
  • If you need repair work, check with your homeowner's insurance agent.
