RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Mike Easley on Thursday denied the clemency request of Ernest West Basden, a convicted murderer scheduled for execution at 2 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 2002.

Basden is on death row for the January 20, 1992, murder for hire of Billy Carlyle White in Jones County. Basden confessed to the killing and was sentenced to death on April 19, 1993. He also received a 10-year prison sentence for conspiracy to commit murder.

"After careful review of the facts and circumstances of this crime and conviction, I find no convincing reason to grant clemency and overturn the unanimous jury verdict affirmed by the state and federal courts," Easley said.
