DURHAM, N.C. — A pair of unique gargoyles proved to be too much for Duke University. Created in honor of two donors to the school, the gargoyles will be taken down at the donors' request.

The gargoyles are actually stone-carved caricatures. They were made to honor Aubrey and Kathleen McLendon after the couple donated money to the school for dorm improvements.

The McLendons were said to be overwhelmed by what they saw, asking Duke to take them down.

Duke plans to replace the gargoyles with more traditional sculptures. They will honor the McLendons with a simple plaque.
