COATS, N.C. — The search was on late Saturday night for the person or people who shot and severely beat an elderly man during an apparent robbery on Friday.
Clinton Rose, 73, was shot in the back of the head, then beaten with a hammer Friday afternoon at his home just outside Coats. He died from his injuries on Saturday.
Rose's wife, Virginia, found him inside his work shop, barely alive. He'd been beaten in the head with a hammer and robbed.
"Why anybody would want to hurt such a good person, I don't know," said Rose's neighbor, Thomas Holmes. "I just don't know."
Investigators said Rose kept a lot of money on him.
Anyone with any information about the attack is asked to call the Harnett Sheriff's Department.
