RALEIGH, N.C. — The Wake County Board of Comissioners raised the sales tax Monday by one-half cent.
The General Assembly recently gave counties the option of enacting a one-half cent sales tax. City and county officials say they need the money to make up for reimbursements the governor withheld.
The Wake Board of Commissioners approved the hike by a 6-1 vote with Commissioner Kenn Gardner opposing the increase.
The increase takes effect Dec. 1 and goes to July 1. Wake County expects to raise between $10 million and $12 million in the upcoming months.
So far, 38 counties have voted for the tax hike.
