Highway Worker Killed On Durham Freeway

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A highway worker is dead after being hit by a truck Friday morning.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. on the Durham freeway near the LaSalle Street bridge. Police say 41-year-old Juan Lauriano Nunez was trying to pick up a bag of trash that had fallen out of his truck.

Fred Coley, who hit Nunez, said he tried to swerve but he could not avoid him.

"They were picking up trash in the middle of the road and when I saw him, it was too late," Coley said. "I pulled my wheel, but the mirror hit him."

One of the southbound lanes was shut down for approximately 90 minutes while police collected evidence.

Coley and Nunez had both worked as subcontractors for the City of Durham and were responsible for picking up debris and mowing highway shoulders and medians.

Police say no charges will be filed in the accident.
