N.C. Church Leaders Denounce U.S. Military Action Against Iraq

Posted Updated

RALEIGH, N.C. — Religious leaders of different denominations gathered Tuesday at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart to protest U.S. military action against Iraq.

Representatives from the North Carolina Council of Churches explained Tuesday why they signed off on a letter to President Bush. In the letter, they denounce a preemptive strike against Iraq.

"We do need to protect ourselves, but attacking and protecting are two different things," said Brian Pierce, of the Dominican Friars of Raleigh.

Most of the representatives from the religious community who showed up said they were frightened by Bush's address Monday night.
