Durham Cruiser Wrecked During Chase

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham woman charged with stealing, then crashing a police car made her first court appearance Monday.

According to Durham police, Bernadette Toomer, 32, was being arrested on drug charges Saturday morning. She was sitting in the back of the police car when she told the officer she felt sick. When the officer opened the window for her, she unlocked the door and took off, police said.

The officer chased Toomer, but she doubled back, manipulated her handcuffs, jumped in his cruiser and took off.

Toomer was caught when the car flipped and landed upside down in a wooded area. She faces eight additional charges for her run from the law.
