Teen Arrested In Shannon Murder Related To Victim

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Fayetteville police say a 15-year-old arrested in the murder of a Fort Bragg officer is the victim's step-daughter.

The teenage girl was arrested at a Cumberland County mobile home Friday.

Maj. David Shannon, 40, a Special Operations soldier, was shot to death July 23 as he slept in his house.

Police have also charged Shannon's wife, Joan, with first-degree murder and conspiracy. Joan Shannon, 35, is being held in the Cumberland County Jail without bail.

The teen faces similar charges.

Police said financial gain through insurance money was the likely motive in the slaying.
