Officials Charge 33 In Cumberland Prostitution Sting

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Cumberland County authorities made dozens of arrests in an undercover crackdown on prostitution over the weekend.

Undercover officers targeted the intersection of Gillespie Street and West Mount Drive near Fayetteville Friday and Saturday night.

The sting followed complaints from people living in a neighborhood near Fayetteville's Crown Coliseum.

"The prostitutes were getting to be very visible and they didn't mind doing their business right out in front of people," Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said.

Butler said of the 33 arrests, 25 men were charged for solicitation and eight women were charged for prostitution.

The sheriff said the sting is part of an ongoing effort.
