FRANKLIN COUNTY, N.C. — Franklin County deputies are on the scene of a potentially explosive situation.
Authorities said a Franklin Correctional Center road crew found a box containing sticks of gel explosive on Tarboro Road between Highway 401 and N.C. 98 Monday morning.
The ATF was notified and identified the contents as the subtance as a gel explosive containing dynamite.
The ATF said the explosive is relatively stable, but long-term weather exposure could be a concern since it is not known how long the explosives have been out in the heat.
Deputies have secured that section of road and the State Bureau of Investigation bomb squad has been called to the scene.
The stretch of road remains open to traffic.
