Cumberland County Shoe Memorial Represents Victims Of Child Abuse

Posted Updated

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — National Child Abuse Prevention Month is just a few days away, but a touching memorial at Fort Bragg Monday kicked off the month a little early.

Nearly 1,800 pairs of children's shoes were on display. Each pair represents a child who was abused in Cumberland County in 2000.

Fort Bragg, Fayetteville and Cumberland County are working to raise awareness and prevent another pair of shoes from being added.

"We, as a community, are fed up with it and we know we all have to do a part to protect those children," said Kelly McDonald of the Child Advocacy Center.

A quilt made by the Star Spangled Quilters was also presented to the community. On the quilt are the names of 30 children who died from child abuse in 2000.
