SELMA, N.C. — A man authorities say promised false hopes to hundreds of local residents is in jail and facing a number of criminal charges.
Police said James Strickland hired people to work at a Selma warehouse, but he never paid them. Many of the employees had given up their jobs, looking forward to better-paying ones with Strickland.
Investigators say the warehouse never existed.
