Wake County Jail Unveils New Expansion

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY, N.C. — Inmates in the Wake County jail have a little more elbow room now, thanks to a 248-bed expansion.

Sheriff John Baker unveiled the expansion at the Hammond Road detention center on Monday. The addition increases the jail's capacity from 176 inmates to more than 400.

It also features a state-of-the-art "video visitation" system that lets inmates talk to visitors over a TV screen.

The new system requires fewer guards, because inmates do not have to be escorted to a visiting area.
