DURHAM — All lanes of Interstate 40 between Highway 54 and 15-501 in Durham County are open after a deadly crash Tuesday night.

Authorities say that Richard Whittaker, 42, of Mebane, was traveling east on I-40 around 9:30 p.m. when he lost control of his vehicle. The vehicle went across the median, crashed through the retaining cables and entered the westbound lanes.

His car slammed into a minivan, driven by James Stewart, 46, of Burlington. Stewart died; two of his passengers survived.

Whittaker also had two passengers in his car.

The four passengers were taken to UNC Hospitals and Duke Medical Center. Officials said that their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Whittaker is recovering at Duke, but his condition has not been released. Charges against him are pending.
