Cape Hatteras Lighthouse To Be Closed For Five More Months

Posted Updated

CAPE HATTERAS, N.C. — Engineers finally have a grip on the scope of repairs needed to fix the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.

Part of the beacon's staircase broke loose in June. Engineers who have examined the stairway said 15 steps and 23 handrails need to be replaced.

The National Park Service says the repairs will cost at least $500,000 and keep the lighthouse closed for five more months.
