Hurricanes Hire Bobby Smith As Consultant

RALEIGH — The Carolina Hurricanes hired formerPhoenix Coyotes general manager Bobby Smith as a consultant onTuesday.

Smith, 43, will scout the Western Conference for the Hurricanes,working out of his home in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Smith served as general manager and alternate governor of theCoyotes from 1996-2001.

Smith had 357 goals and 679 assists in 15 seasons with theMinnesota North Stars and Montreal Canadiens, and was a four-timeAll-Star. He had the winning goal in the final game of the 1986Stanley Cup Finals in 1986, and played in the finals with Minnesotain 1981 and 1991.

Smith had 64 goals and 96 assists in 184 playoff games.
