Police: Bank robbery leads to chase, wreck on Jones Sausage Road

Raleigh police identified the person arrested after he was accused of robbing a bank and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase in Raleigh on Friday.

Officers said Ishmael Aviv Santiago, 35, is accused of robbing a Wells Fargo on Western Boulevard that led to a chase and crash at the Jones Sausage Road exit from Interstate 40.

Authorities said Santiago robbed the bank around 9:19 a.m. and was driving recklessly in a black Audi. North Carolina State troopers spotted a vehicle matching that description 10 minutes later. 

Police were able to identify the vehicle in connection to the bank robbery due to trackers that were placed inside the bag of money by the teller. 

Troopers followed Santiago, who was traveling at a high rate of speed. He later crashed, leaving him seriously injured.

Officers said Santiago was cut from the car by emergency personnel, and taken to the hospital for treatment. He is being held in police custody. 

The crash involved four cars, and the other drivers were taken to WakeMed with minor injuries.  

Police said Santiago also has prior outstanding warrants for assault on a female, communicating threats, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence and misdemeanor stalking.
