Someone tried to break in the building next to where Ravenscroft teacher Zoe Welsh lived on the same day she was killed, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
A window remained boarded up on Thursday at the St. Mary’s Square North Apartments in Raleigh. Police have not identified a suspect after WRAL News asked if it was Ryan Camacho, who is charged with the murder of Welsh.

Raleigh police records show the attempted break-in happened between 4 a.m. and 6:45 a.m. Saturday. Police said there was an attempted break-in at the same spot on Dec. 30 as well.
Around 6:33 a.m. Saturday, Raleigh police said Welsh called 911 from her home on Clay Street to report that a man was inside her home. While Welsh was on the phone, the suspect began assaulting her.
When officers arrived, they found Welsh with life-threatening injuries. Welsh was taken to a hospital, where she later died.
Police identified the suspect as Camacho and charged the 36-year-old man with Welsh's murder and felony burglary.
Radio traffic indicates that Welsh may have recognized her accused attacker.
“Broke into the window,” the radio traffic stated. “She said it was a homeless subject that frequents Fletcher Park.”
On Dec. 27, a neighbor took photos that appear to show Camacho urinating on their property.
Employees of businesses along Peace Street said they saw Camacho on Jan. 2 wandering into shops with a “blank stare on his face.” Some employees even told WRAL News they kicked Camacho out.
WRAL News had several questions for Raleigh police, including:
- When did Raleigh police respond to that first attempted apartment break-in the morning of Jan. 3?
- Were Raleigh police aware of neighbors’ concerns about Camacho leading up to Welsh’s death?
Police didn’t answer those questions, only saying that it’s under investigation.
Camacho is due in court again on Jan. 26.
