RALEIGH, N.C. — Tom Fetzer, a former mayor of Raleigh and head of the state Republican Party, says he is fighting a new battle against cancer.

Fetzer, 56, said Saturday that he was diagnosed with a form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma two weeks ago.

Doctors told him he has a good chance of beating the disease and that the type of cancer he has responds well to chemotherapy, Fetzer said. He is undergoing treatments at Rex Cancer Center.

Fetzer stepped down as chair of the North Carolina Republican Party in November, saying he wanted a more family-friendly work schedule.

He married two years ago and has an 8-month-old son.

"Life is unpredictable," Fetzer said Saturday, adding that he appreciated the thoughts and prayers of others.

Fetzer runs a lobbying firm, Fetzer Strategic Partners.

He served as mayor of Raleigh from 1993 to 1999.
