A bill that would limit access to e-mail lists passed the North Carolina state legislature Wednesday.

The contact information gathered by cities and towns – often so they can e-mail updates to residents – is public information by law, and some cities had been forced to share it with third parties.

The bill passed Wednesday would limit that information to public inspection. Municipalities would no longer have to provide an electronic copy of the subscriber list.
