WILSON, N.C. — Wilson County Sheriff Wayne Gay's former right-hand man will be on the ballot in November in the election to replace his boss.

After Gay lost his primary bid to keep the seat, Maj. John Farmer announced his plan to run as an unaffiliated candidate against Democrat Calvin Woodard in November.

The county Board of Elections certified on Wednesday that Farmer has collected enough signatures to earn a spot on the ballot.

Farmer, who retired June 1, said he considered running for sheriff in the past but never wanted to run against Gay. He decided to put off his retirement after Gay lost and community members urged him to run.
