ELON, N.C. — With less than seven weeks until the November election, Democratic Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and Republican Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory are in a virtual dead heat in the gubernatorial race, according to a poll released Friday.

The Elon University Poll, which surveyed 411 people statewide this week, found that 37.2 percent of respondents plan to vote Republican in the race, while 34.8 percent said they would vote Democratic. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minue 4.9 percentage points.

About 37 percent of those surveyed approved of each candidate, and another 34 percent disapproved of each.

Education, the economy, taxes and health care were the issues that are likely to influence voters in the gubernatorial election, the poll showed.
