DURHAM, N.C. — Former City Councilman Floyd McKissick won a special election Monday night to replace the late state Sen. Jeanne Lucas.

Members of the local Democratic Executive Committee cast votes to nominate a replacement for Lucas, who died last month. McKissick, a local attorney and chairman of the Durham County Democratic Party, won on the fourth ballot.

Lucas, the first black woman to serve in the state Senate, was in her seventh term when she died.

Gov. Mike Easley will have the opportunity to review the nomination before appointing someone to serve the rest of Lucas' term in office.
