DURHAM, N.C. — A community group on Monday announced its support for former City Councilman Floyd McKissick to replace the late state Sen. Jeanne Lucas.

McKissick, a local attorney, is chairman of the Durham County Democratic Party.

Lucas, the first black woman to serve in the state Senate, was in her seventh term when she died last month. She was 71.

The state Democratic Executive committee will name someone to the open seat next week. Gov. Mike Easley will then review the nomination and appoint someone.
