RALEIGH, N.C. — State lawmakers are targeting fees that can accrue to gift cards that are bought and go unused for a while.
A new bill in the General Assembly would prohibit companies from tacking on so-called maintenance fees.
Some stores and others automatically deduct the fee from the balance if the card isn't used within a certain amount of time, eventually running the balance down to zero.
